2nd Sunday of Lent: Bear your share of hardship for the Gospel

Bear your share of hardship for the Gospel.  To be Christian and to live a life in Christ does not mean we will be free from trial and hardship.  In fact, quite to the contrary.  Our lives will be fraught with difficulty, persecution and suffering, all for the sake of the Kingdom.  This is because to follow Christ is so counter-cultural and our families, friends, loved ones, co-workers, neighbors, etc., do not know what to make of us.  They fear our message and the changes it would require to truly live a Christian life.

This is why Jesus says in Luke, 12:21 that he did not come to bring peace but division.  This is not meant to contradict his meaning in John 17:21—that we may all be one—but sometimes this unity comes about not through tender life experiences of love and kindness, but harsh moments of division followed by strong words exhorting others towards conversion.  We do seek unity, but this path of unity comes with a share of hardships which we are all called to bear, each in our own way according to God’s design.  It will be difficult, it will be trying, it will be painful, but most of all, it will be worth it.
